Creating a list helps you keep your shopping goals totally fixed in your mind. It will keep you from coming home with a bag full of items you'll never use or maybe even look at again.

Create a budget. No, this doesn't have to be made by some financial wizard or mathematical genius. It can be a plain sheet of paper with some self-made guidelines to help you with your spending habits. Start by figuring out exactly how much money is coming in each month. Subtract your fixed monthly expenses such as your mortgage, car and insurance payments. The remaining money will be divided into things such as groceries and gas. Don't forget to figure in some spending and saving money. You'll feel much more in control of your financial destiny seeing a plan laid out on paper.

Create financial goals. They don't have to be big to start with, but they must be something that makes you excited. Perhaps you've always wanted a new leather couch. Make saving for that item your priority. It will feel so much better to use money from your savings rather than putting it on your credit card. Being debt-free is a feeling you'll quickly become addicted to with enough practice! Financial freedom is something you won't want to live without once you've had a taste of it.
