Mark Twain was an American humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer at the turn of the 20th century. He is probably best known for his novels the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I thoroughly enjoyed reading those stories growing up. Today, my interest in Twain has changed, as I have discovered that he is the author of some really insightful quotes. He`s known to have penned quite a few, but here are the 15 quotes that I believe are his very best:

- A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain.

- Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

- Do something every day that you don’t want to do; this is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain.

- Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.

- Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of a joy you must have somebody to divide it with.

- If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.

- It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

- Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.

- Let us so live that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.

- The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer someone else up.

- The man who doesn’t read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them.

- Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education.

- How little a thing can make us happy when we feel that we have earned it.

- Ideally a book would have no order to it, and the reader would have to discover his own.

- You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.
